Michael Gellatly

It’s not essential to my practice to work with the agency of stability, but rather to employ the tools of uncertainty. This is where the subject/objects sidesteps the knowable. Working with various visual constructs, my work has always been about image making, fueled by a restless exploratory energy. Continuing from younger Surreal tendencies, juxtaposing and hybridizing are common practices with me. The architecture of the imagery is erected through process, material and method, and from an animal impulse to touch. Drawing is touching. Where painting feeds painting, drawing feeds imagery relentlessly, vigorously, inexhaustibly offering visual keys to unlimited realities. Whatever the skin draping this architecture, it’s rationally rendered and wholly invented – one foot rooted in nostalgia for an iconic mythological past, the other in a keen awareness of the present, a third seen out back by the river donning a cubist outfit
